Welcome to another thrilling installment of my hiking adventures! Today, I want to take you through the events of Day 50, a day filled with breathtaking views, unexpected encounters, and some hilarious mishaps. Let's dive right in!
The Morning's Adventure
I woke up to a crisp morning, the temperature hovering around the low 40s. It was a peaceful start, with no bugs to bother me and an unexpected hole in my shorts! Yes, you read that right. A hole in the crotch, to be precise. Fortunately, I had a savior in the form of MasterChef, who came to my rescue with a sewing kit. A quick fix, and I was ready to embark on the day's journey.
McAfee Knob: A View to Remember
The hike to McAfee Knob was a delightful experience. Starting off in the woods, the trail soon opened up to rolling hills and pastures, with cows grazing peacefully. I had to keep an eye out for cowpies, but it added a touch of humor to the walk. The climb back onto the ridge was moderate, and I enjoyed the smooth sailing along the trail, catching up on some much-needed rest and even getting some blog work done.
As I approached McAfee Knob, the trail became busier with day hikers. The well-maintained path made for an easy hike, and I soon reached the shelter, where I fueled up for the final push to the knob.
And then, the moment I had been waiting for - the awe-inspiring view from McAfee Knob! It took my breath away, and I couldn't help but exclaim, "Best view of the trip so far! Drink." (You'll have to imagine the drink part). I took my time, soaking in the beauty, and even captured some memorable photos with my hiking buddy, Fozzy.
But the excitement wasn't over yet. As I was about to head back, I encountered a rattlesnake sunning itself on the path! It was a close call, and I quickly found an alternate route back to my bag, heart pounding.
Tinker Cliffs: A Series of Stunning Cliffs
After the rattlesnake encounter, I made my way to Tinker Cliffs, the third and final stop of the Virginia Triple Crown. The hike was smooth, and I arrived in no time. Tinker Cliffs lived up to its reputation, offering not just one, but dozens of rock cliffs with breathtaking views. It was hard to choose a favorite, but once again, I had to declare, "Best view of the trip so far! Drink." (You know the drill by now).
An Unexpected Cowherding Experience
As I was hiking towards Tinker Cliffs, I came across a rather unusual sight. A man was yelling into the woods, trying to shoo his cows back down the mountain. It was a hilarious and unique experience, with cows grazing nonchalantly all around. I couldn't help but chuckle at the situation, wondering how those cows managed to climb up there in the first place!
The Evening's Wildlife Encounters
The day's adventures continued as I made my way to Lambert's Meadow Campsite. On my descent, I spotted some deer grazing along the trail, a peaceful sight. But the real thrill came when I heard rustling uphill. Initially assuming it was a squirrel, I soon realized it was a black bear, jogging down towards me!
I yelled to alert others, and the bear, startled, stopped in its tracks and gave me a reproving stare. It then turned and ran, occasionally glancing back at me. It was a younger bear, probably an adolescent, and I felt a mix of excitement and relief. It was a close encounter, and I'm glad I had the presence of mind to alert others.
A Day of Extremes
Day 50 was a day of extremes - from peaceful cow-filled pastures to rattlesnake encounters and black bear sightings. It was a day that kept me on my toes and left me with unforgettable memories. As I reflect on it, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences and the beauty of nature that I get to witness on this journey.
So, there you have it, folks! Another day, another adventure. Stay tuned for more tales from the trail, and until then, happy hiking!
